TUPANDACTYLUS

TUPANDACTYLUS

  • Means: “Tupan Finger” (Tupan is the thunder god of the Tupi people)
  • Period: Early Cretaceous Period, 112 million years ago
  • Where: Brazil

The Tupandactylus was known for the semicircular crest over the snout connected a bony prong, which extended behind the skull.

What is the crest for?  Scientists are divided on the
function of the crest. Some think it was used in display
to advertise to mates or threaten rivals. Others think it         may have helped them fly by detecting air currents and
     steering.
